Davis Cup

This weekend, the final of the Davis Cup is going to take place in Gent (Belgium). But what is the Davis Cup? It’s an international tennis competition in which the best male teams are playing against each other. This competition has been created in 1900 but it has changed a lot since then. Nowadays, 133 different countries can take part in that event.

On this Friday (the 27th of November) it’s the first match opposing the Great Britain and Belgium. As every first match, the best player of one team is playing against the second player of the other team. So this time, it is David Goffin (16th of the ranking) who starts the first match against Kyle Edmund (100th of the ranking).

The second match of Friday, however, it is going to be way more difficult for the belgian team because it is Andy Murray (2nd of the ranking) who is represented Great Britain against Ruben Bemelmans (108th). The captain of the Belgian team, Johan Van Herck, decided to “sacrifice” Bemelmans because he estimated that it was hardly probable to beat Murray. At the end of the day, the scores would probably be 1-1.

On Saturday, there is only one single match schedule and the players are prone to be change at the last minute, depending on the captains’ decision.

Finally, on Sunday, the two last matches are going to take place: one single and one double. The single one would probably opposed Andy Murray to David Goffin (= the two best players of each team, however, David Goffin has never beat Andy Murray so it is going to be rough). On the other hand, for the double, the Murray’s brothers are going to play against Steve Darcis and Kimmer Coppejans. This final is really important for both team because Belgium has never won that competition before whereas the last time Great Britain has won was in 1936.
